Abstract

1378343 Stern tube bearing lubrication J KUIKEN 12 April 1973 [3 Feb 1972] 5012/72 Heading B7S [Also in Division F2] In combination with and connected to a ship's stern tube bearing lubrication system, a fluid pressure transmitter-controller establishes and automatically maintains a predetermined constant differential between the pressure of the water on the outboard side of the stern shaft outboard seal 2 and of the stern tube 1 bearing lubricant on the bearing side of the seal. The fluid pressure transmitter-controller comprises at least one flexible diaphragm such as 10 or 11 secured fluid-tight between a primary 6 and a secondary 7 diaphragm housing whereby the primary housing communicates through pipe 27 with the outboard water and the secondary housing communicates through pipe 26 with the stern tube lubricant. Spindle 12 has one end secured fluid-tight to the centre of the diaphragm so that the spindle and diaphragm assembly is allowed restricted reciprocal movement, lever 16 and rod 20 arrangement transmits a force from adjustable spring 17 to the spindle and on to the diaphragm to produce the fluid pressure differential required. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the pressure differential required is produced by pump 30.
