Abstract

1378260 Electrostatic separators PETROLITE CORP 9 April 1973 16841/73 Heading B2J [Also in Division C5] Apparatus for resolving water-in-oil dispersions in a ship-board environment is mounted on the deck 16 and comprises an upper enclosure 85 having curved top and bottom closures 82, 84, and containing electrodes 86, 87 between which a dispersion is introduced by way of an inlet 88 and a nozzle 89. The electrical field between the electrodes coalesces the water phase in the dispersion as droplets which fall onto the closure 84, the resulting oil phase being removed through an outlet 91. The separated water passes via a passageway 92 into a lower enclosure having a curved bottom closure 83 upon which an accumulated body of water 97 collects. A float 101 senses the water/oil interface 96 and actuates a controller 102 to operate a valve 99 in a water outlet 98, so that the water level 96 is maintained below the lower terminal of the passageway 92 which is also fitted with a check valve 93 to prevent water passing from the lower enclosure to the upper enclosure 85 where it might short cir- cuit the electrodes 86, 87. The upper and lower enclosures may be in the form of separate interconnected cylinders or spheres (Figs. 1 and 2, not shown). In another embodiment the upper enclosure has a conical configuration (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown).
