Embossing.-A continuous process for finishing and lustring sateens, batistes, and other fabrics whether mercerized or not consists in passing the fabric through a schreinering machine and subecting it to a pressure from two or three times as great as that usually employed and also to a greater heat, and subsequently in the same machine applying a film of boiling finishing-liquor to one or both sides of the fabric while the fabric is still hot from the rollers and while it is under tension, then winding the fabric in a wet state and allowing it to remain batched before stretching, drying, and conditioning it. A machine for carrying out the process comprises a batch roller i, a tension device f, engraved and heated pressure roller b, a lower roller c, carried by a hydraulic ram, a roller h, partially immersed in a trough g of a boiling solution of alizarine oil, and a batch roller i<1>, on which the treated material e is wound.
