Abstract
1376979 Halogenated phosphate esters GAF CORP 31 May 1972 [1 June 1971] 25429/72 Heading C2P [Also in Division D1 Compounds of structural formula wherein X 1 and X 1 <SP>1</SP> are independently chloro or bromo or when taken together form a bond, X 2 and X 2 <SP>1</SP> are independently a halogen radical or when taken together form a bond, and the sum of X 1 , X 1 1, X 2 and X 2 <SP>1</SP> atoms in the compound is at least two, may be prepared by halogenation of tripropargyl phosphate. Preferably a solution of tripropargyl phosphate in a halogenated hydrocarbon solvent such as carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, methylene chloride, trichloroethylene, or perchloroethylene is treated with chlorine or bromine. Other halogens such as iodine and fluorine may additionally be employed, however, in the preparation of highly halogenated species. The examples describe the preparation of: tri-(2,2,3,3-tetrabromopropyl) phosphate, tri-(2,3-dibromoallyl) phosphate, tri-2,2,3,3-tetrachoropropyl) phosphate, tri(2,3, - dichoroallyl phosphate, di - (2,3 - dibromoallyl) propargyl phosphate, and di- (2,3-dichloroallyl) propargyl phosphate. The compounds may be applied to fibrous or fibre-forming materials to render them flameretardant.
