Abstract

1376741 Wheel balancing apparatus STEWART-WARNER Ltd 10 Jan 1972 [8 Jan 1971] 1039/71 Heading G1X Apparatus for use in dynamically balancing the wheel of a vehicle comprises a motor driveable drum 21 for engaging and driving the wheel to be balanced and a brake 25 releasably engageable with the drum 21. As shown, the drum 21 is mounted on a spindle of an electric motor 18 which is pivotally supported at 19 on a wheeled frame 11, the frame 11 forming a mounting for an operator's seat 12 and a stroboscope lamp and amplifier unit 13 and storage space for a pick-up assembly 14 which is connected by a flexible lead 16 to the unit 13 and intended for mounting on part of the vehicle under test. In use, a rocker 23 is pivoted anti-clockwise from a mid position by a manually operable lever 24 to urge the drum 12 into engagement with a wheel (22) to be balanced and simultaneously to actuate a switch which causes the motor 18 to become energized so that the wheel is set in rotary motion. The lever 24 may then be moved to pivot the rocker 23 back to its mid position where the drum 21 is disengaged from the wheel (22) and subsequently in a clockwise direction to urge the brake 25 into braking engagement with the drum 21 and to urge the drum 21 into braking engagement with the wheel 22.
