Abstract

1376600 Developer composition AGFAGEVAERT 7 Feb 1972 [15 Feb 1971 11 Jan 1972] 4646/71 and 1282/72 Heading G2C An aqueous alkaline developer for producing a high contrast image on photographic silver halide material comprises 0À05-0À5 mole/l of hydroquinone or a substitued hydroquinone, 5-50 g/l of sulphite ions, 5-100 mg/ 1 of a nitro-indazole or 50-300 mg/ of a nitro-benzimidazole, and sufficient alkaline compound to produce a pH of 9À7 to 11À5. The nitro-indazole may be 5-nitro, 6-nitro, 3-methyl-5-nitro or 3-methyl-6-nitroindazole. The nitro-benzimidazole may be 2-γ- sulphopropyl mercaptomethyl-5-nitro-benzimidazole. The developer may also comprise sodium formaldehyde hydrogen sulphite, up to 3 g/l of ascorbic acid, 0À2-5 g/l of bromide ions, 0À5-2 g/l of a polyethylene glycol having a MW of at least 1500 and a development increasing onium or polyonium compound, in particular 0À1-3 g/l of 1, 1'-ethylene-tris (oxyalkylene) -bis-(pyridinium p-toluene-sulphonate. The silver halide contains at least 50 mole per cent of chlorine. The material may be passed continuously through a development bath by means of rollers.
