Abstract

1375243 Coated films FUJI PHOTO FILM CO Ltd 17 Feb 1972 [17 Feb 1971] 7500/72 Heading B2E [Also in Division. G2] A method of subbing a surface of a polyethylene terephthalate film which film has been subjected to biaxial stretching and heat settin,g which comprises the steps of (1) rendering the surface hydrophylic, (2) applying a solution of hydrogen peroxide in water or an aqueous solvent to the hydrophilic surface, (3) subjecting the surface to U.V. radiation while the coated surface is in a wet state, (4) applying to the treated surface a solution of a hydrophilic resin or a gelatin dispersion which solution or dispersion contains at least one solvent or swelling agent for the polyethylene terephthalate, so as to form a subbing layer. Step (1) may be carried out by U.V. irradiation, corona discharge, flame treatment, ozone oxidation, microwave, ultrasonic or acid treatment. The concentration of H 2 O 2 is preferably from 0.001 to 30% by weight, and a water miscible solvent such as methanol or dioxan may be added to the peroxide solution. Additives to the solution or dispersion are listed for hardening, filling, colouring or rendering the layer antistatic. A topcoat of gelatin/silver halide emulsion may be applied.
