Abstract

1375210 Pipeline filters; centrifugal separators SIEMENS AG 9 Dec 1971 [24 Dec 1970] 57325/71 Headings BID and B2P A filter for power plant cooling water comprises a pipeline section 1 enclosing an inwardflow screen 2 of conical or frusto-conical form, tapering upstream, a tangential outlet 6 which discharges solids and a proportion of the feed water from the upstream side of the screen, and a tangential inlet 8 which continuously or intermittently delivers flushing water to the downstream side of the screen to create a helical flow therealong. In Fig. 1, inlet 8 opens through the pipe wall, and annular flange 10 assists in generating the helical flow which detaches solids from the upstream side of the screen. A valve 11 generates a helical flow in the feed water upstream to cause some centrifugal separation of solids from the feed water. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the upstream helical flow is created by a tangential inlet (13) and a conical end closure 15 in the pipe section, assisted by an upstream tangential inlet 20 for flushing water. The downstream flushing water inlet comprises an axial feed tube with tangential, outlets (18, 19), and in Fig. 3 (not shown) a similar feed tube is axially adjustable to clean various parts of the screen. Fig. 3 also illustrates an upstream vane (21) and an inclined, tangential, upstream flushing water inlet (24), located in a throttled portion of the pipeline adjacent the screen. In Fig. 4 (not shown) upstream helical flow is induced by delivering a proportion of the feed water through inclined tangential inlets (25), this arrangement supplementing the other arrangements. In Fig. 5 (not shown) the flushing water is fed to the downstream side of the screen partly through an inclined tangential inlet 8 and partly through a nozzle (26) which directs it towards the screen tip. This arrangement is said to render the screen pressure drop more uniform across the the pipeline diameter.
