1375106 Selective printing or embossing DATA CARD CORP 13 Nov 1972 [15 Nov 1971] 52221/72 Heading B6F Two or more lines of characters are embossed on a credit card or other medium by a single embossing module (e.g. 18, Fig. 5) having a fixed row of embossing elements (punches P 1 to P n and dies D 1 to D n ), by subjecting the card to a square wave movement as it is transported past the elements. The card is indexed along a guide rail 14b, Fig. 3, by pins 118, Fig. 4, of an endless band 116 acting as pushers. In each horizontal index or embossing position, the card is vertically displaced to present each time to be embossed to the fixed embossing elements, by vertical displacement of the rail 14b. A complete card embossing system (Fig. 1) comprises an input hopper (10) and an output hopper (12) for the cards which are transported therebetween along a track (14) passing through three modules (16, 18 and 20) operative to emboss the lines with single or plural lines. The third module (20) may be used to magnetically encode the cards. Although the system is normally under computer control, a typewriter (28) provides for manual input as well as a hard copy output of what is embossed and encoded.
