Abstract
1375102 Riveting; nut-runners CHICAGO PNEUMATIC TOOL CO 20 Jan 1972 [8 March 1971] 2757/72 Headings B3U and B3N A nut running tool having a combined nut running and crimping mechanism 27 and a drive means for operating said mechanism both for running down a nut and crimping the same, whereby the mechanism is operable in a first stage of operation to run down a work nut on a threaded member to a predetermined degree of tightness, and in a second stage of operation to crimp the nut. In operation compressed air from a hose 14 is passed into a piston chamber 42 via chamber 47, side port 46 and hose 45, to cause a piston 41 to slide a dog 34 into driving engagement with a drive nut 37. The air is also passed from the chamber 47 to a motor 13 which rotates the drive nut 37 via bevel gears 25, 26 and dog 34. Helical splines on the drive nut engage helical grooves of a travel wedge 54 so that rotation of the drive nut causes the wedge to move upwardly and frictionally lock its shoulder 60 against the gear 26. The bevel gears, drive nut and travel wedge thus rotate as a unit and act through a splined wedge head 58 to rotate a sleeve 57 so as to run down the nut to the required torque. The motor is then driven in the opposite direction to reverse the rotation of the drive nut 37 relative to the travel wedge 54. The wedge 54 is driven downwardly against the form of a spring 66 and simultaneously the sleeve 57 is restrained against a fixed surface 59. The downward moving wedge head 58 co-operates with jaws 68 via cam surfaces to pivot their ends 75 towards the axis of the sleeve and crimp the nut. The motor is stalled by resistance of the jaws to further pivoting when their backs stop against the wall of the sleeve. A pneumatic circuit (Fig. 9, not shown) is described for automatic actuation of the tool.
