Abstract

1374988 Detecting cracks in components MOTOREN-UND TURBINEN-UNION MUNCHEN GmbH 2 Dec 1971 [16 Dec 1970] 56080/71 Addition to 1239349 Heading G1S A system for detecting the formation of cracks in a component, e.g. a shaft, axle, pressure vessel or steel-concrete structural member, comprises a resistance wire embedded in the component and an electric circuit connected to the wire so as to detect the change in resistance when the wire breaks upon formation of a crack. When applied to a pressure vessel 10 the system comprises several resistance wires 11 extending circumferentially in the vessel shell and connected to an indicating unit 12. In a modification the resistance wires may be disposed in randomly oriented directions and connected to the indicating unit in such manner as to accurately indicate the position of any crack. The following abridgment is included in this series since the Specification was through an error, not allotted to this group. Reference to it will be found in the name index to this volume.
