Abstract
1374810 Automatic control of turbines WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 20 Oct 1971 [20 Oct 1970] 48795/71 Heading G3N [Also in Division F1] A gas turbine electric power plant is controlled so as to accelerate the turbine from a predetermined lower to an operating speed in a substantially fixed period of time, dependent on the selected gas turbine inlet temperature by controlling a fuel system in dependence on a selected representation of turbine speed for a constant turbine gas inlet temperature which is independent of the compressor air inlet temperature. A power plant 100 comprises a gas turbine 104 driving on A-C generator 102 through a reduction gear 106. The turbine is connected through ducting 112, 114 to inlet and exhaust silencers 108, 110. The plant is arranged in a sectional steel frame building not shown, and mounted on a bed-plate which is optionally extendable 116, to incorporate a master control station for up to three additional plant units. The power plant is controlled by a digital computer and system circuitry in a cabinet 118, having an operators panel 120 associated with a remote send/receive printer 122 and protective relay panel 124. An auxiliary bed-plate supports a starting diesel or induction motor 126 and a DC turning motor 154 for driving the turbine during non- operating periods to avoid thermally induced shaft bowing. Emergency power is provided from a battery 132 for the computer and emergency shut-down. The switchgear for the generator is provided on a pad 142. The programme system for the power plant comprises a sequencing program 600 and a control program 602 which determine computer inter facing and machine control. The program 600 also supervizes an automatic synchronization program 608 controlling generator voltage and turbine speed. Facilities are provided for operator control through a consol program 606, alarm printout through a program 610 co-ordinated with a thermocouple check program 616 and logging printout through program 618, 620.
