Abstract

1374569 Grinding MASCHINENFABRIK GEHRING KG 30 April 1973 [29 April 1972] 20491/73 Heading B3D Apparatus for machining a wall surface of a workpiece, such as the inner epitrochoidal face of a rotary piston machine or the like, comprises a rotatable tool head having a member 9 for applying a tool 11 to the surface under a load governed by a pressurizable piston/cylinder arrangement 12, 13, and a control member 18 arranged to actuate a control device 17 for controlling the pressure in the arrangement according to the angular position of the head. As described, the apparatus is in the form of a honing tool having a head 1 carried by a driving rod 3 rotatable and axially reciprocatable in the direction of the arrows 4, 5. The tool head has a rectangular body 8 between a pair of circular flanges 7 having pivots to for lever-shaped supports 9, the outer ends of which have stripshaped honing stones 11. The supports are urged outwardly by pistons 12 in cylinders 13 each communicating by way of respective bores 15 on the rod 3 with grooves 34 in a hub 20 having bearings 21 supporting the rod for rotation, axial movement between the rod and hub being prevented by a flange 22 and collar 23. A plate 19 is formed on the hub and carries pressure control devices 17 each connected by a respective pipe 30 to one of the annular grooves 34. Each device is also connected by pipes 31, 32 to its own pressure source 36 and reservoir. Each device 17 is mounted on a pivot 25 about which it can be adjusted by a screw 27 engaging a slot 28 and has a push-rod 24 engaging a lever 40 which is mounted in a respective pivot 41 and has a roller 43 engaging the edge 38 of a control element 18 secured to the flange of the rod 3. The control devices are adjustable by knobs 29 and the effective lengths of the levers 40 is adjusted by pivotal adjustment of the devices about the pivots 25. As the tool head 1 rotates, the control element 18 acts on the devices 17 which control the pressure supplied to the pistons 12 according to the angular position of the tool head and thus the pressure of the honing stones against the surface. Two honing tools 1 may be arranged one above the other on the rod 3, one having coarse stones and the other having fine stones. The apparatus may be used for honing circular surfaces.
