Abstract

1374158 Offshore structures CHICAGO BRIDGE & IRON CO 17 Aug 1972 [14 Oct 1971] 38439/72 Heading E1H An offshore structure which is floated into position before being sunk to the sea bed comprises skirt-like shell 10 open at the lower end and connected at its lower edge to ballasting means 11, a second skirt 25, connected at its lower edge to the skirt 10 to define a well-space 28 partitioned by members 29, and a hollow cylindrical vessel 14 attached to the shell 10, the vessel 14 being capable of maintaining the buoyancy of the whole structure even when the shell 10 and well-space 10 are filled with water. A platform 22 is supported by a column 21 attached to the top of the vessel 14. In operation, when the structure is located at its correct position an annular trough 12 formed in the ballasting means 11 is filled with liquid, then a portion of the air is vented from shell 10. When the ballasting means 11 is submerged, the well space 28 is filled with water to maintain stability, then the shell 10 is filled with water. The structure remains buoyant until a quantity of water is admitted to vessel 14, the controlled sinking of the structure then occuring. The skirt 25 may be attached to the shell 10 at its upper end having apertures in its upper portion, or it may be outside the shell 10. When in position on the sea bed the shell 10 may be used for storage of oil. For Figure see next column
