Abstract

1373987 Making pistons MAHLE GmbH 27 July 1972 35280/72 Heading B3A To form a light metal piston with a dished combustion chamber in the piston head 1, a blank, Fig. 1, formed with a recess 2, to be enlarged to form the combustion chamber, has a charge carrier beam applied to the surface in which the recess is provided to produce two or three parallel remelting seams 6, Fig. 4, the beam being oscillated transversely to the general direction of the seams to cause overlapping of the seams. The recess is then machined to run over the area 5 comprising partly piston material and partly remelted material so that the rim 3 of the final piston chamber is defined by remelted material. Suggested apparatus for producing the charge carrier beam is an electron beam welding machine.
