Abstract
1372943 Purifying I C engine exhaust gases NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 16 Aug 1972 [21 Oct 1971 12 Nov 1971] 38186/72 Heading F1B The flow of secondary air from a source, e.g. an engine-driven pump 28 to the exhaust manifold 14 or the catalyst chamber 24 of a catalytic converter 20 is controlled by a valve 32. The valve 32 is controlled in accordance with the temperature in the catalyst bed 26, a thermostat 70 closing a switch 66 at a predetermined temperature, e.g. 700‹C., or when the rate of temperature rise reaches 50‹C./s to energize the solenoid 60 of a valve 52 and connect a vacuum pump 50 to the valve 32. The vacuum causes the valve spool 42 to move from the position shown connecting the pump 28 to the passage 38a supplying the manifold branches 14a to a position connecting the pump to the conduit 36 having an outlet 36a in the catalyst chamber 24. The catalyst bed may be a honeycomb structure (26'), Fig. 3 (not shown), with passages (26a) extending axially through the structure and the outlet (72) of the conduit 36 may open immediately upstream of the structure to direct cooling air through the centre of the structure. A plurality of air outlets may be provided upstream of the structure.
