1372757 Mould closing devices US INDUSTRIES Inc 27 Jan 1972 [2 Feb 1971] 3925/72 Heading B5A The invention relates to a moulding machine having main and pilot hydraulic circuits, a main ram 6 in a main cylinder 2 for opening and closing a mould (not shown), a jack ram cavity 10 in the main ram, a stationary jack ram 11 extending into the cavity 10 and mounted at the other end on a support 3, an hydraulic fluid reservoir which is in communication with the main ram cavity 22 when the main ram is retracted, and a bore 14 extending through the jack ram through which main hydraulic pressure can act to move the main ram to the advanced position. According to the invention the machine comprises a prefill valve assembly including a valve cylinder 4 extending between the main cylinder 2 and the jack ram support 3, a poppet 20 reciprocable in the cylinder 4 between positions opening and closing connection between the fluid reservoir and the main ram cavity 22, means for urging the poppet towards open position and means for directing main hydraulic circuit pressure against an end of the poppet for closing it. The use of main hydraulic fluid pressure produces very rapid closing of the poppet, thereby reducing the total cycle time of the machine. The invention is applied to an injection moulding machine, one mould half (not shown) being mounted on a platen 7 secured to the main ram 2. The hydraulic system includes a profile control valve 40 and a ram control valve 41. The valves 40, 41 include pilot valves 42, 44 and main valves 43, 45 respectively. Operation.-The platen 7 and main ram 6 are advanced rapidly by main hydraulic pressure supplied through lines 69, 80, 77, 75 and bores 13, 14 into the jack ram cavity 10. When the ram 6 has reached its advanced position fluid pressure builds up inside the jack ram and is transmitted through a port 33 to a seat 30 on the poppet 20 which is thereby moved to the right to cut off the connection between cavity 22 and the reservoir. Main pressure is then supplied through bore 13, port 33 and an annular space 38 between poppet 20 and support 3 to the cavity 22 so as to apply full pressure to the main ram 6.
