Abstract

1372552 Adjustable seats for incontinent &c. patients A F ANFILOGOFF and I R MADGE 24 Oct 1972 [24 July 1971] 34860/71 Headings A4J and A4N [Also in Division B7] A wheel chair comprises a unitary shell 11, incorporating a seat 13 and back 14, which is pivotally supported on a frame for adjustment about a transverse axis, the shell back 14 being transversely and vertically curved to give an enfeebled occupant support and the lateral extremities of the upper and lower edges of the back being substantially equidistantly spaced from a vertical median plane of the chair. The shell is moulded glass reinforced plastics and has integral wings 16 and arms 15. The shell is mounted on the frame by an axle 18 which engages in one of a series of holes 25 in each of the front frame uprights. Frame longitudinals 24 carry notched racks 26 in which struts 29, pivotally mounted to the shell at 30 engage to determine the angular position of the shell. The frame wheels 40 may be adjustable in height. A loose or press studded seat cushion 31 and a back cushion 34, which is fitted to a glass reinforced plastics shell 38 that clips into the shell 11, are provided. The cushions are waterproof and define with the lower rear part of shell 11, a urine channel 36 which has a drain hole 43. A urine collection bag may be attached to hooks 44 on the shell 11. In another embodiment, Fig.4, axle 18 is engaged in slots 47 at either side of a plastics base 50 which is provided with castors 48 and brakes 49. A bar 45 protruding at either side of the shell cooperates with notched racks 46 to determine the angular position of the shell.
