Abstract

1371991 Electrically insulating film CELANESE CORP 12 April 1972 [15 April 1971] 16779/72 Heading D1P [Also in Division H1] Electrically insulating film is produced by impregnating with a liquid dielectric a porous film of a polymer, such as polypropylene or polyethylene, exhibiting crystallisation, said porous film having a lower bulk density than a film differing therefrom by the absence of pores, a crystallinity above 20%, a pore size less than 5,000 Angstrom units, a nitrogen flux of 5-400 g.moles/sq cm/min x 10<SP>3</SP> and an elastic recovery at 50% extension (measured at 25‹C and 65% relative humidity) of more than 40%, and heat-shrinking the impregnated film to encapsulate the dielectric. Specified dielectric liquids are trichlorobenzene, perfluorohydrocarbons, perfluorobutylamines and ethers, silicone oils, cotton seed oil, mineral oil, castor oil and trichlorodiphenyl. The dielectric liquid may contain dipentene dioxide and 1-epoxyethyl-3, 4-epoxy cyclohexane, or alumina. The heat shrinking may take place before or after the film is incorporated into an electrical component. Vacuum or pressure may be applied during impregnation and also mild heating.
