Abstract

1371979 Alkaline secondary cells GOULD Inc 12 Dec 1972 [13 Dec 1971 (3)] 57192/72 Heading H1B An alkaline secondary cell has interfitting porous metal electrode bodies 34A, 36A of nickel or iron and separated by an electrolytecontaining fabric (woven or non-woven) or gel separator 38. The co-operating surfaces of the electrode bodies are correspondingly frusto-conical. The bodies are respectively impregnated with positive and negative active materials. The metal case and a metallic connector 30A of nickel or steel provide terminal connections. In variants in which the inner surface of the innermost electrode body is right cylindrical the metallic connector may be made from sheet metal and take the form shown in Fig. 11, or take the form of a mesh. Such connectors are at least partially embedded in the electrode body. Similar connectors may be embedded in outer electrode bodies. Separators may instead be made as in Fig. 5, and folded over the end of the inner electrode body to envelop its sides. The two pieces 54 may be separate or integral. A maltese cross shape may be used instead. Nylon fabric may be used, with aqueous potassium hydroxide. Cell systems suggested are nickel oxide/zinc; silver oxide/zinc; silver oxide/cadmium; nickel/oxide iron; and nickel oxide/cadmium.
