Abstract
1371977 Paper B F GOODRICH CO 7 Dec 1972 56452/72 Heading D2B [Also in Division C3] Paper of improved wet strength and heat stability is obtained by impregnating paper with a polymer of (a) from 25 per cent to 99 per cent by weight, based on the weight of the polymer, of (1) at least one acrylic, methacrylic or ethacrylic ester having the general formula: wherein R a is -H, -CH 3 or -C 2 H 5 and R" is an alkyl group containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms, an alkoxyalkyl or alkyl thioalkyl group containing 2 to 8 carbon atoms, or a cyanoalkyl group containing from 2 to 18 carbon atoms, or a hydroxy alkyl group containing from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, or (2) at least one vinyl or vinylidene halide having the formula CH 2 =CXX' wherein X is a halogen atom and X' is a hydrogen or halogen atom; (b) from 0.5 per cent to 20 per cent by weight, based upon the weight of the polymer, of at least one alkyd monomer transesterification reaction product of a triglyceride having an Iodine Number from 50 to 400 and a molecular weight from 400 to 1000 with a monoolefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid, or an ester, anhydride or salt thereof, having the general formula: wherein each of R a and R b is a hydrogen atom or a methyl or ethyl group; x and y are 0 to 12; and each of R 1 , R 2 and R 0 is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group containing 1 to 24 carbon atoms, an alkoxyalkyl group containing a total of 2 to 12 carbon atoms in the group, an alkyl thioalkyl containing a total of 2 to 12 carbon atoms in the group, a hydroxy alkyl group containing 1 to 12 carbon atoms in the group or a cyano alkyl group containing 2 to 12 carbon atoms in the group; and (c) 0 to 50 per cent by weight based on the weight of the polymer, of at least one copolymerisable aliphatic vinylidene monomer containing a terminal CH 2 =C= group.
