Abstract

1371895 Isostatic compression UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 18 Feb 1972 [19 Nov 1970] 55144/70 Heading B5A [Also in Division C3] Shaped articles are formed by mixing a thermoplastic or thermosetting resin binder with a filler, forming the mixture into particles or granules and isostatically compressing the mixture in a pre-formed flexible mould at a temperature such that the binder softens. The moulding may be retained under the isostatic compression while cooling if a thermoplastic binder is used or while heat curing if a thermosetting binder is used. The isostatic pressure may be about 2 tons/inch.<SP>2</SP>. The filler may be ceramic, glass, glass-ceramics, cermets, metal or a mixture of these. In an example, the mixture comprised polystyrene, methyl ethyl ketone and aluminium oxide.
