Abstract
1370916 Sulphonated or phosphated glycerol ethers PECHINEY UGINE KUHLMANN 6 August 1971 [7 Aug 1970] 37011/71 Headings C2C and C2P The invention comprises compounds of the formula where one of R and R<SP>1</SP> is a straight chain alkyl radical and the other is the same or different straight chain alkyl radical or an aromatic radical which may be substituted by one or more straight chain alkyl radicals such that the sum of the carbon atoms in R and R<SP>1</SP> is 10 to 16, X has an average value of 2 to 15, A represents # PO or # SO 2 , M represents an alkali metal or substituted or unsubstituted ammonium radical, m is the number of acid functions of A and n is 1 or 2 such that m - n is 1 or 2. The compounds may be made by condensing ethylene oxide with a diether of glycerol of formula and converting the polyoxyethylated derivative by esterification and simultaneous or subsequent salt formation, e.g. with sulphamic acid or phosphoric anhydride. The diethers may be obtained by reacting 1 alkoxy- or 1 phenoxy-2,3-epoxy- or 2 hydroxy 3 halo-propane with alcohols or phenols. The compounds exemplified are those where R is butyl, ethyl, hexyl or octyl; R<SP>1</SP> is octyl, decyl, hexyl, or phenyl or p butyl phenyl, x is 4 or 6, A is SO 2 or PO and M is ammonium.
