Abstract

1370485 I C engine crank-cases SOC D'ETUDES DE MACHINES THERMIQUES 8 Oct 1971 46926/71 Heading F1B A crank-case for an engine with in-line or V-arranged cylinders comprises a cast or rolled steel plate 1 having openings 2 for receiving cylinder liners 6, a top plate 18 having openings 19 for receiving water jackets 5, longitudinally extending walls 13 and 20, and transversely extending intermediate and end-walls 15, 16, 21. The plate 1 may be cast in one piece and is formed with ribs 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 on to which the longitudinally and transversely extending walls are butt-welded. The webs 22 of the transverse walls 21 are inclined to the perpendicular to the crank-shaft axis and thickened portions 24 of the webs define upper crank-shaft bearings to which bearing caps 28 are secured by bolts 29. The caps 28 are supported by screws 31. The plate 1 may comprise two or more parts (103, 104), Figs. 7 to 9 (not shown), connected by a transversely extending weld (105). In a V-engine with cylinders which are not offset from one row to the other the webs 22 of the walls 21 are perpendicular to the crank-shaft axis.
