Abstract

1369130 Container closures; lever lids CONTINENTAL CAN CO Inc 10 Oct 1972 [18 Oct 1971] 46682/72 Headings B8T and B8D A container for vacuum packing has a body 11 with an open end bounded by a part 16 which extends outwardly and is downturned from the open end of the body. A rim 18 terminates in a curl 19. A lid has a downturned peripheral flange 21 and a gasket 22 to provide a seal. Adhered to the upper surface of the lid 13 is a pull tab 14, e.g. a pressure-sensitive tape, which overlies an opening 24. By pulling the end portion 23 of the pull tab 14 the opening 24 is uncovered. The pull tab is then used to remove the lid. In another embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), the pull tab is formed from an extension of the lid flange which is doubled back and used as a lever for breaking the seal. In a further modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), the pull tab breaks a score line in the lid for venting the container. Again, Figs. 3 and 10 (not shown), a lever is inserted between the curl 19 and lid flange 21 to break the seal. A separate plastics pull tab may be used together with a plastisol sealing gasket, Fig. 9 (not shown).
