Abstract

1368924 Anchoring nuts and bolts VSI CORP 27 March 1973 [27 March 1972] 14653/73 Heading F2H A blind rivet type of anchored nut, Fig. 1, or stud, Fig. 7, comprises a deformable cylindrical sleeve 23, 23a having a first portion 41, 41a of its bore of smaller diameter than a second portion 33, 33a, and a slidable nut 37, Fig. 1, or stud 37a, Fig. 7, having a cylindrical shank portion 39 or 39a disposable in the larger bore portion 33, 33a of the sleeve and formed with means 64, 64a to engage the sleeve and prevent relative rotation between the nut or stud and the sleeve and having a larger effective outer diameter than the inner diameter of the smaller bore portion 41, 41a of the sleeve, an enlarged head 47, 47a disposable adjacent the end 35, 35a of the sleeve from which the larger bore portion 33 extends, and a thread portion 53 or 94 to engage another fastener member. When the nut 37 or stud 37a is pulled relative to the sleeve 23 or 23a, the shank portion 39, 39a is drawn into the smaller bore portion 41, 41a of the sleeve to radially expand it, and the head 47, 47a deforms the sleeve portion including the larger bore 33, 33a as at 61, 61a to secure the assembly in a workpiece 11. The sleeve is of a more ductile material, e.g. 300 series stainless steel, than the nut or stud, e.g. 400 series stainless steel, and may have a countersunk head 21 or a projecting head 21a. The means 64, 64a comprises serrations on the shank portion 39, 39a which may be formed by circumferential grooves, Fig. 1, or axial grooves, Fig. 7. The stud or nut is undercut below the head at 53 to receive the end 35 of the sleeve. In Fig. 1, the nut is engaged by a screw-threaded mandrel 55 having a break neck 57 for setting by a tool 62. In Fig. 7, the stud is integrally connected to a mandrel 55a by a break neck 57a. In a modification, Fig. 4, the nut head 87 has an axial extension 89, and the shank portion 83 has serrations 85 as shown, In another modification (Figs. 2, 3, not shown) the anti-relative rotation means comprises three axial ribs (67) on the shank portion (65).
