Abstract
1368497 Electric cables SUMITOMO ELECTRIC INDUSTRIES Ltd 6 Oct 1971 [7 Oct 1970 26 Nov 1970 1 May 1971] 46564/71 Headings F4H and F4U [Also in Division H1] A section of a power cable 21 is cooled by the evaporation of a liquid refrigerant in a duct along the length of the cable. Liquid flows under gravity from a reservoir 26 through a tube 27 to a joint 23 at one end of the section, heat generated by the cable causes evaporation of this liquid, and the vapour so formed passes through a joint 22 into a tube 24, which is shorter than tube 27 and which leads back to reservoir 26 and a condenser 25. The refrigerant is preferably a wholly or partly halogenated hydrocarbon, examples of which are given. The condenser 25 and reservoir 26 may be naturally air-cooled, forced air-cooled, or water-cooled. The volume of tube 27 may be large (Fig. 6, not shown) in which case it is slightly inclined and the reservoir is omitted. In Fig. 7, (not shown), the tube 27 is surrounded by a cooling water tube (28<SP>1</SP>) and both the reservoir and condenser are omitted. Another embodiment (Fig. 9, not shown) includes refrigerant tubes (102, 103) and a natural air-cooling unit (109) with a valve (108) which is actuated by the pressure in the reservoir (104) and opens or shuts the condenser pipe. In further modifications (Figs. 10-12, not shown) a pressure-sensitive device respectively controls a fan (111) which force-cools the cooling unit, a damper (117) which controls the natural air-cooling of the unit, and a heater (118) in the reservoir. In the embodiment of Fig. 13 (not shown), heat is introduced into a heating tube (121) in the shorter refrigerant tube (103) to increase the flow of refrigerant. To maintain the pressure in the reservoir above a predetermined valve, the embodiment of Fig. 14 (not shown), includes a tank (122) of a gas, e.g. nitrogen, which is different from the refrigerant and is not condensed under operating conditions.
