Abstract
1367328 Cooling furnace walls HOOGOVENS IJMUIDEN BV 22 Oct 1971 [23 Oct 1970 14 June 1971] 49134/71 Heading F4B A cooling arrangement for the wall of a furnace comprises a chamber divided by a baffle 9 disposed generally parallel to the wall into an outer passage 11 and an inner passage 10 the two passages being in communication at the bottom of the chamber and, at the top, both communicating with an open space in which the vaporized coolant issuing from the inner passage can separate from the liquid. The coolant may be water. It circulates as shown by the arrows owing to the difference of density between the water in the outer channel and the mixture of steam and water in the inner. The steam escapes through duct 5 and the separated water returns to the outer passage for re-circulation. Make-up water is added either from a constant head supply (13, Fig. 2, not shown), or from a supply duct 16 controlled by a water-level monitoring device 19, 20. Splash guide 14, shaped to deflect water issuing from the inner passage back into the outer passage, may serve as a reservoir 15 for the added water, which cools the furnace wall and is thereby pre-heated to about boiling point. The inner and outer passages may each be divided by further baffles into parallel flow channels. The wall cooled may be the bosh of a blast furnace. Alternatively the cooling chamber may form a wall of a tunnel furnace.
