Abstract
1366808 Producing aluminium ALCAN RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd 5 Feb 1973 [8 Feb 1972] 5901/72 Heading C7D Alumina is reduced at 1600 to 2500 C by carbon in the presence of liquid Pb and/or Bi and Pb and/or Bi vapour to form an alloy containing Al which latter is recovered. Heat is introduced into the change by a stream of Pb and/or Bi vapour. The alloy product may be cooled to give a Pb and/or Bi rich phase, which is recycled to the reduction process, and an Al rich phase, which is treated to remove Bi and/or Pb.
