Abstract

1366056 Differential gear A HILADO 10 Jan 1973 [10 Jan 1972] 1267/73 Heading F2D A differential gear comprises a number of interengaging worms so arranged as to provide limited slip. As shown, a driven cage 6 supports coaxial output shafts 4, 5 formed with worms which mesh respectively with planetary worms 2, 1, and each planetary worm is integral with a further worm 2a (1a), the worm 2a meshing with the worm 1 but not with 5, and the worm (la) meshing with the worm 2 but not with 4. All intermeshing worms are of the same pitch but opposite hand and the worms 4, 5 are slightly larger in diameter than the worms 1, 2 so that although intermeshing pairs of these will rotate at the same angular velocity their linear velocities at the points of contact will differ whereby the worms 4, 5 will drive the worms 1, 2 but the latter will not, or will only to a limited degree, drive the worms 4, 5, thereby providing a limited slip or locking characteristic.
