Abstract

1365965 Steering columns BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE AG 4 Nov 1971 [4 Nov 1970] 51428/61 Heading B7H . In an axially adjustable steering apparatus having an extensible steering shaft 2 mounted in an axially movable sleeve 4 which is rigidly attached to a casing 3 and carried in clamping ring 11, the clamping ring 11 is supported on the vehicle by a deformable element 7 which serves to absorb and dissipate impact energy. The element 7 is U-shaped in section having arms 8 which are connected to the damping ring 11 and may have corrugations 9, or opening (33) (Fig. 3, not shown) formed therein to faci litate collapse on impact.
