Abstract

1365920 Adjustable seat backs A & M COUSIN ET CIE ETABS COUSIN FRERES 4 Aug 1971 36618/71 Heading A4J [Also in Division E2] In a hinge fitting for the adjustment of the inclination of the backrest of a vehicle seat, each of the members 1, 2 which are attached to the backrest 4 and seat pad 5 respectively and are mounted on a tubular bearing 3, is formed with a plurality of holes 6, 7 extending along the circumference of a circle, the number of holes in one member being one less than the number of holes in the other member, e.g. eighteen holes in member 2, nineteen holes in member 1, such that in any position of member 1 relative to member 2 a number of holes in each member are in alignment and/or partial alignment, with a number of a plurality of locking members 11 passing through the aligned and/or partially aligned holes. As shown in Figure 2 the backrest is locked in position. To change the angle of inclination of the backrest, an operating lever 19 attached to a casing 17 is rotated causing rotation of casing 17 which effects axial movement of the casing (in the direction of arrow F 2 ) together with a shaft 16 which passes through the tubular bore 3. Axial movement of the shaft brings each of the teeth 31 of a plate 30 into engagement with a hole 6 in the member 1, the number of teeth 31 being equal to the number of holes 6, thereby forcing the number of the locking members 11 out of the holes 6 which are aligned and/or partially aligned with holes 7 in member 2 so that the inclination of the backrest can be adjusted. When the backrest is in the desired position the lever is released and the casing 17 is biased by a spring 20 to the position shown in Fig. 2 in which a number of the locking members pass through the aligned and/or partially aligned holes in the two members, thereby locking the backrest in the adjusted position. In a modification Figs. 9-18 (not shown) movement of the locking members out of engagement with the aligned and/or partially aligned holes is effected by a plate (55) mounted on the same side of the joint as the locking members 11.
