Abstract
1365889 Spray carburetters; ventilating I C engine crank-cases BRITISH LEYLAND (AUSTIN-MORRIS) Ltd 7 Dec 1971 [7 Feb 1971 20 May 1971] 58034/70 and 15972/71 Headings F1B and F1K To prevent the delivery of fuel into the carburetter induction passage 13 when the engine is switched off after running the space 18 in the fuel chamber 12, e.g. a float chamber, is connected to a source of vacuum rather than the normal vent, e.g. to atmosphere. The space 18 is normally connected through tubes 19, 22, orifices 29 and 30 in the solenoid valve 20, and the evaporative loss canister 22a to atmosphere but when the engine is switched off after running the switch 31 is closed and the solenoid 23 is energized to connect the tubes 19 and 21 and move the valve head 26 to seal orifice 29. A switch 33 in the solenoid circuit is responsive to engine oil pressure and opens the circuit when the oil pressure has fallen below a predetermined value. In a further embodiment, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), the solenoid valve 20 has spaced valve heads (26, 62) which co-operate with respective seats (28, 63) and in the unenergized state the valve connects the carburetter float chamber space 18 to atmosphere. A canister (51) containing carbon granules (53) is connected between the valve and the space 18 and a space (54) in the canister is also connected to the engine rocker box cover (57) and the space above the fuel level in the fuel tank 60 by respective conduits (56, 59). When the valve 20 is energized the space 18 is connected to the engine intake manifold through a valve outlet (64).
