Abstract
1365845 Boron-containing phenolic resins DYNAMIT NOBEL AG 21 March 1973 [25 March 1972] 13706/73 Headings C3R and C3B A heat-curable resinous mixture comprises a boron-containing phenolic resin and from 3-60 % by weight, based on the resin, of an epoxy compound, and optionally one or more fillers such as asbestos and expanded clay. The mixture may be cured by heating from 40-120‹ C. The epoxy compound may be an epoxy alkanol or epoxychlorohydrin having a C 2 -C 8 alkylene chain, such as 2,3-epoxy-1-propanol, or a glycidyl ether such as ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether or 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether. The resin is preferably one obtained by reacting formaldehyde or a formaldehyde-yielding compound with one or more phenyl borates having the empirical formula BO x (OR) y wherein R is a phenyl or cresyl radical, x is from > 0 to < 1À5, y is from > 0 to < 3, and 2x+y must be 3. If the phenyl borate is solid, paraformaldehyde or trioxane can initially be added to form a soft composition to which is then added any additional formaldehyde or formaldehyde yielding compound required for the condensation reaction.
