Abstract
136,464. Mond, A., (International Precipitation Co.). May 27, 1919. Gases, electrically precipitating suspended particles from.-Suspended material is removed from furnace gases and the like by humidification of the gas followed by passage through an electrical precipitator, sufficient cooling taking place either just before or during the passage through the precipitator to ensure the condensation of moisture on the collecting-electrodes. The hot furnace-gases pass by flue 1 into the chamber 2 provided with spraying-devices 12, where they take up water vapour and at the same time have any coarse suspended material washed away. Tho gases may be cooled at this stage by being passed through a chamber 3 fitted with a cooling-device 18, whereby their temperature is reduced sufficiently to condense some of the water vapour. They are then introduced into an electric precipitator of any suitable tvpe, here shown, as comprising a number of collecting-electrodes consisting of vertical pipes 5 in which hang insulated wires 9. The suspended material is deposited upon the electrodes along with the condensed water vapour. The amount of condensation obtained may be sufficient to wash away the precipitate, or only just enough to ensure the conductivity of the deposited material. In any case, it is essential to maintain the deposit at a temperature of not more than 100‹ C. If the gases are not cooled prior to passage through the precipitator, the collecting-electrodes are themselves cooled to a temperature below the dew-point by radiation or by exposure to a current of air from the fan 17, or cool air is admitted by opening the damper 19. When the gases are already sufficiently moist, the passage through the humidifying-chamber 2 may be dispensed with. Specification 119,236 is referred to.
