1364550 Anionic lactam polymerization BAYER AG 11 Aug 1971 [13 Aug 1970] 37625/71 Heading C3R and C3C A composition, which forms a storage-stable melt at 70-120‹ C. and which can be polymerized in the absence of further additives at 130-350‹ C., comprises: (a) one or more lactams (A) having # 7 ring-members, (b) 0À01-4% mole, based on (A), of a catalyst (B) being the salt of a carboxylic acid and an alkalimetal or alkaline-earth metal; and (c) # 5% mole, based on (A), of a co-catalyst (C), the mole ratio (C)/(B) being > 5; (B) is the salt of (I) RR<SP>1</SP>XC-COOH, (II) R<SP>11</SP>O-COOH, or (III) where R and R<SP>1</SP> each represent H, alkyl, or aryl, or R and R<SP>1</SP> together form a cycloaliphatic ring; X is an electron-accepting group; R<SP>11</SP> is C 1-16 linear or branched alkyl or C 6-18 mono- or poly-nuclear aryl; and R<SP>111</SP> is a divalent organic radical; and (C) is a mono- or poly-isocyanate which may be masked. In (B) X may be aryl, cyano, ester, or acyl; (B) maybe K cyanaocetate, Na phenylacetate, K monoethyl malonate, K methyl carbonate, Na ethyl carbonate, K isopropyl carbonate, or Na #- caprolactam-N-carboxylate. (C) may be stearyl or phenyl isocyanate or hexamethylene-1,6- or tolylene-2,4-diisocyanate, and may be masked with caprolactam or acetyl acetone. N-monosubstituted amides may be added as M.W-regulators. Other conventional additives may be present. The product may be more or less foamed, depending upon the co-catalyst content.
