Abstract
1363422 Gel oxide particles UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 18 Oct 1971 [16 Oct 1970] 49379/70 Heading C1A [Also in Division C7] To a solution of mixed soluble salts comprising iron and at least chromium and/or manganese is added a water-soluble polymeric organic compound having a plurality of hydroxyl groups (other than a cellulosic derivative which increases in viscosity in the presence of an alkaline solution) to form a viscous solution of complexes with the metallic ions. The said solution is then introduced dropwise into an alkaline solution to precipitate the metals in gel particles. The polymeric compound may be a polysaccharide such as an alkali-modified starch or polyvinyl alcohol and may be present in amount of 1-20% by weight of the amount of metal in the solution. The precipitating solution may be sodium hydroxide or ammonium hydroxide solution, e.g. of 5- 50% concentration. The precipitated particles are used in the production of alloys (see Division C7).
