Abstract

1363229 Invalid chairs BATH INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL ENG 1 Dec 1971 [1 Dec 1970] 56926/70 Addition to 1277210 Heading A4J A chair for assisting invalids to stand and sit down has a seat portion 23 resiliently urged to a raised position in which it is tilted forwardly relatively to the normal sitting position by a spring, movement of the seat portion 23 to the raised position being guided by a quadrilateral linkage formed by links 14, 16, 19 and a fixed link between two pivots 15 and 17, means being provided for controlling the tilting of the seat portion so that it tilts to a smaller degree than the upper link 14. This means may comprise a screw 25 threaded through a bracket 24 on the underside of the seat portion, the screw providing an adjustable lost motion connection between the link 19 and the seat portion. On tilting of the seat the lost motion is first taken up, screw 25 then abuts link 19 such that the seat portion and link rotate in unison. In the second embodiment, the linkage is a parallelogram and the means for controlling the tilting of the seat portion relative to the upper link comprises a link 51 parallel to link 19, pivotally secured to the upper and lower links and having an upward and forward extension 52 which carries a roller 53 engaging with the underside of the seat portion. A foot rest 57 may be connected to the parallelogram linkage such that in tilting of the seat portion, the foot rest moves from a leg supporting position in front of the seat to a substantially vertical position below the seat.
