Abstract
1362902 Nuclear power plant; cooling reactors GES ZUR FORDERUNG DER FORSCHUNG AN DER EIOG TECHN HOCHSCHULE 21 Jan 1972 [25 Jan 1971] 3029/72 Heading G6C Following a nuclear reactor emergency trip, after-heat is removed by opening a by-pass line across a coolant-driven turbine so as to increase the flow of coolant through the reactor. In the nuclear power plant embodied in Fig. 1, the reactor is cooled by gas passing through three circuits in parallel, only one being shown in full. Hot gas passes, in each circuit, through a high pressure turbine 6 driving compressors 10, 12 and a generator 19, thence through heat exchangers 8, 9 to low pressure compressor 10, heat exchanger 11, high pressure compressor 12, heat exchanger 8, then back to the reactor. Following rupture, as at 30, in one circuit, a pressure gauge 17 initiates the emergency trip and causes a by-pass valve 16 across turbine 6 to open. The valve 16 is also controlled from a speed governor 20 on the compressor drive shaft 4. A further by-pass valve 24 is controlled in dependence upon the inlet/outlet pressure across the compressor 12, and another by-pass valve 27 is controlled in dependence upon measurements from a temperature gauge 28. These valves are opened successively to ensure effective heat removal from the reactor. A pony motor 22 can be energized to maintain or increase the speed of shaft 4. In a second embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown), the single turbine is replaced by a low pressure turbine (62) which drives the generator by way of a governor-controlled shaft (42), and a high pressure turbine (61) having a common drive shaft with the compressors. The reactor pressure gauge controls a by-pass valve (161) across the low pressure turbine, while the by-pass valve (162) across both turbines is controlled from the governor (202) of the compressor drive shaft. The reactor is of the fast breeder type.
