Abstract
1362179 Insulated cable BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd 25 Nov 1971 [25 Nov 1970] 55978/70 Heading H1A A method of making an electric cable consists of (a) applying to a metallic conductor, layers of a polyimide tape, at least one of each adjacent pair of tape surfaces and the outermost surface being coated with a layer of fluorinated ethylenepropylene copolymer (FEP) not more than 5 Ám thick, (b) heat bonding the layers together, (c) etching the exposed surface of the covering, (d) coating the etched surface with a polyurethane lacquer, and (e) drying and curing the lacquer. The conductor may be copper, chromium. copper or cadmium chromium copper and may be plated with, e.g. nickel. As an example "Kapton 616" (R.T.M.) polyimide tapes are used; these tapes comprise 25 Ám of a polyimide coated on both sides with 2.5 Ám of F.E.P. Two tapes one helically wound (one with each lay) with overlaps of 67% or 76% to provide insulation many layers thick. The conductor is provided with at least six layers of tape arranged so that at least four are continuous over any point of the conductor. The surface is then etched with an alkali metal, e.g. sodium in an organic solvent, e.g. naphthalene in tetrahydrofuran, or liquid ammonia. The surface is then coated with six layers of pigmented polyurethane lacquer. More than two tapes may be applied; and the amount of overlap correspondingly reduced. The tapes should be applied so that equal numbers have right and left-hand lays.
