Abstract

1362148 Read only stores J FAJANS 18 Jan 1973 2669/73 Heading G4A Information is stored in a three dimensional store 50 (Fig. 1) by directing pulses of radiant energy on to a body of material to produce a network of decomposed portions within the body. As described a ruby or gas laser 12 is pulsed with the information to be stored to direct a pulse of radiation via filter 32, lens 34, aperture 38 in a steel sheet 36 and lens 40 on to a block of polymethyl methacrylate which is carbonized at the focal area of lens 40. Hand wheels 16, 18, 20 are used to move the block of plastics in three directions between radiation pulses. The stored information is read by directing light from a lamp (62, Fig. 3, not shown) via aperture (66) and lens (40) on to the block (50), transmitted light being passed via lens (68) and shutter (74) (comprising a motor driven slotted disc), aperture (72) to a photomultiplier tube (78). Hand wheels permit the block to be moved so that light at the focus of lens (40) scans the stored information. Instead of plastics material, glass or quartz, in which cracks are formed by the radiation pulses, may be used.
