Abstract

1361904 Crash restraint bags ICI AMERICA Inc 18 May 1972 [20 May 1971] 23346/72 Heading B7B [Also in Division H2] A sensor-detonator for operating an inflatable protective air bag in a motor vehicle comprises a metal can 1 containing a detonator 17 and a sensor 12 which detects a change in motion to close a switch (not shown) in response thereto. One terminal 11 of the sensor is connected via an insulated pin 6 and a diode 9 to a current source whilst the other terminal 20 of the sensor is connected to the current source via a pin 19, the detonator 17, a metal support 18 and the cam 1. Closure of the switch therefore fires the detonator and a linear shaped charge 21 which fractures a bottle of compressed gas (not shown) to inflate the air bag. A capacitor 14 enables a firing current to be supplied if an accident causes breakage of the electrical connection to the pin 6.
