Abstract

1361854 Treating exhaust gases ZENITH CARBURETTA CO Ltd 14 July 1972 [23 July 1971 3 Dec 1971] 34761/71 and 56182/71 Heading F1B In an I. C. engine exhaust system, exhaust gases and air are fed to a reactor 39 for combustion, the air supply rate depending upon the rotational speed of the engine and the load upon it. The air is supplied to the reactor by an engine driven pump 40 through a valve member 41 having an inlet port 43, a main outlet port 44 and a secondary outlet port 45. The secondary outlet port is at the end of a shunt conduit 46 containing of flow restricting device 47. A main conduit 49 extends between the inlet port 43 and the main outlet port 45. A valve member 52, controlled by a spring-loaded diaphragm 54 in response to the suction in the engine inlet 36, determines whether the flow passes through the main conduit 49 or shunt conduit 46. The arrangement is such that at low loads and high suction the flow is through the shunt conduit and at high loads through the main conduit. The mass flow of air supplied to the reactor is therefore less at low loads than high loads.
