Dials.-A dial gauge reading, for instance, to hundredths of a millimeter is provided with an additional pointer indicating by magnified movement to thousandths of a millimeter, and means are provided for disengaging the actuating- mechanism of this pointer from the main mechanism of the instrument when the greater precision is not required. A rack 2 sliding in the casing 1 is acted upon by a spring fixed to the rack and to the casing, movement of the rack being limited by stops 4, 5, 6. The rack gears through wheels 7, 9, 11, 12 with a wheel 13, upon the spindle 14 of which the main pointer 15 is fixed. The wheel 13 also gears with a spring balance wheel 16. An arm 19 pivoted at 18 carries pivotally at the free end wheels 21, 22. of which the wheel 21 may gear with the wheel 12, the wheel 22 gearing with a pinion 23 gearing in turn with a spring balance wheel 24. The arm 19 has a part 28 projecting at right-angles and formed with two notches 29, 30, either of which may receive a pin 31 carried by a spring-pressed slotted plate 32 guided on the fixed pin 33, so that the arm 19 is locked either with the wheel 21 in or out of gear with the wheel 12. Pivoted to the projection 28 at 35 is a forked arm 36, the member 37 of which carries a pin 38 bearing against a spring strip 41 pivoted at 40 and carrying a braking-plate 41 adapted to bear against the wheel 24 and lock it when the wheels 21, 12 are disengaged. The forked part of the arm houses or guides the spring for the balance wheel 24. The arm 19 is moved from outside the casing by a button 45 operating a pin 43 on the part 28 by means of a slotted plate 46.
