Abstract
1360353 Thermocouples UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 15 Jan 1973 [19 Jan 1972] 2677/72 Heading H1K The wires 6, 6a of a thermocouple are joined together by electrolytically etching and then reversing the polarity of the applied voltage to electrolytically deposit a bead of metal 12. The junction shown in Fig. 3 is one of several spaced along the needle 2 of a disposable hypodermic syringe and forming part of a probe, e.g. for cryosurgery. Each pair of wires 6, 6a of copper and constantan emerges through a hole in the wall of the needle 2, extending through a glass bush 10 and being secured by resin cement 11. The cement 1 and bush 10 are recessed and the needle is cleaned ultrasonically. Using an acidic solution of copper sulphate the exposed ends of the wires 6, 6a are first electrolytically etched and then, by reversing the polarity of the current through the electrolyte, a bead 12 of copper is deposited. The electrolyte is preferably agitated ultrasonically during deposition. Finally the needle 2 is dried, the recesses are filled with cement which is cured and rendered flush with the needle surface, and a spray coat of insulation is applied. Reference is also made to the measurement of the skin temperature of model aircraft for use in wind tunnels.
