Abstract
1359537 Reactor temperature control system CREUSOT-LOIRE 12 Oct 1971 [28 April 1971] 47459/71 Heading B1X [Also in Division F4] A closed circuit heat exchange system adapted to selectively heat or cool a double walled vessel 1 of the kind comprising a plurality of tubes 3 extending between header chambers 51, 52 incorporates a cooling device 60, e.g. an air cooler, a heating and vaporizing device 63, and three-way valves 64 and 65 arranged to selectively direct heat transfer fluid through the cooling device 60 or the heating device 63. The system is particularly useful for polymerization reactions within the vessel where it is first necessary to supply heat to the vessel to start the reaction and is thereafter necessary to remove heat from the vessel. When the system is operated to withdraw heat from the vessel, the heat transfer fluid, which may Freon (registered trade mark) or water, is vaporized in the tubes 3 and then condensed in the cooling device 60. On the other hand when heat is supplied to the vessel, fluid entering the tubes 3 as vapour is condensed and returned to the device 63 for revaporization. In a modified system (see Fig. 3, not shown) a compressor (8) and an expansion valve (9) are disposed on opposite sides of the cooling device when additional cooling of the heat transfer fluid is required.
