1359299 Data processing systems INTERNATIONAL COMPUTERS Ltd 15 Dec 1971 [17 Sept 1970] 44404/70 Heading G4A A data processing system is coupled to digitizing means for an input map (e.g. showing power distribution networks on a street plan) and a manual entry device (e.g. keyboard) for annotating the digitized information (e.g. by appending a classification code), the system being arranged to edit the annotated information to form macro-units each consisting of information belonging to a particular class (e.g. road names, building details, type of network installation) and which is defined with reference to one of a number of reference points (e.g. particular points on adjoining maps), and, to select a particular display, the stored macro units are compared with information defining one or more classes of information and reference points relevant to the desired display in order to select required macro units and supply them to a graphical display device such as a C.R.T. A directory of macro identifying codes and related mass storage addresses holding the macro units may be held in an associative memory. The system may be arranged to display macro units derived separately from a number of maps by referring them to one particular map and altering the co-ordinates to produce a reduced scale display containing the selected information from all the maps. The display may be used to alter the information by conventional techniques while the relevant macro has been called from mass storage to processor storage, and the display information may also be supplied to a graph plotter/ microfilm plotter to provide a permanent record of the altered maps.
