Abstract

1359200 Treating glass fibres PPG INDUSTRIES INC 13 Aug 1971 [14 Aug 1970] 38065/ 71 Heading DIP A glass fibre strand suitable for use as a reinforcement for polyolefines is produced by drawing molten glass-streams through orifices in a bushing to form individual glass fibres, moving the fibres away from the bushing forming them into a strand and drying the strand, an aqueous size comprising a heatstable free radical initiator e.g. α, α'-bis (tbutyl peroxy)-diisopropyl benzene, α, α' tris (tbutyl peroxy)-diisopropyl benzene and 2, 5-(tbutyl peroxy)-hexane, 2, 5 (t-butyl peroxy)-hexene and dicumyl peroxide and a non-ionic surfactant e.g. alkyl phenyl-polyalkoxy alkanols and alkyl polyether alkanols being applied to the fibres before strand formation. The aqueous may also contain (i) coupling agents, e.g. vinyl tris (beta ethoxymethoxy) silane, vinyl triethoxy silane, gamma-methacryloxy propyl-trimethoxysilane, vinyl triacetoxy silane or an acrylate salt of gamma-amino propyl triethoxy silane, (ii) lubricants e.g. saturated and unsaturated fatty acid amides of 4-24C optionally acid solubilised including polymers of the unsaturated amides anhydrous, acid-solubilised polymers of the unsaturated fatty acid amides and alkyl imidazolines (iii) protective colloids e.g. polyvinyl-alcohol or -pyrrolidone (iv) film formers e.g. vinyl acetate copolymer and (v) pH control agents e.g. acetic acid. Needled mats formed from strands as prepared above may be laminated to polyolefins and polypropylene modified PVC sheets by heat and pressure.
