1358853 Fireproof cladding of beams W A SMITH 27 Jan 1972 [27 Nov 1970] 56611/70 Heading E1K A method of applying fireproof, heat insulation cladding to a constructional beam comprises applying pre-formed fire proof, heat insulation cladding slabs directly to the external face of at least one flange of a beam with a fireproof adhesive, at least one cladding slab having a fixing clip embedded therein projecting portions of which are bent over to engage and hold the slab in position. In the embodiment of Fig. 2, a soffit slab 11 of fireproof material incorporating vermiculate is first secured by a fireproof adhesive to the lower flange 12 of an I beam, the extremities of an embedded clip 13 being bent over the ends of the flange 12 to hold it in place, after which slabs 15 of the same material are secured solely by fireproof adhesive to the two faces of the web 16 of the beam, the fireproofing being completed by further slabs 17, 18 of fireproofing material suitably formed as shown and fixed by fireproof adhesive to the inner faces of the lower and upper flanges 12, 19. In the embodiment of Fig. 3, a hollow I beam 20 is fireproofed by employing a slab 21, similar to the slab 11, in combination with slabs 25 having clips 29, for securing to a ceiling 28, and clips 27 which cooperate with the bentover ends 24 of embedded clips 23 in the soffit slab, fireproof adhesive being used between the soffit slab 21 and the lower flange 22, and between the lower edges of the slabs 25 and the soffit slab 21. Modifications of this embodiment (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) are also described. In a further embodiment, Fig. 6, an angle iron beam 33 is fireproofed with slabs 34, 39, 40, of which the slab 34 is secured by the bent-over ends of embedded clips 35, 36, while the slabs 39, 40 are secured to the beam flanges and to the longitudinal edges of the slab 34 by fireproof adhesive.
