Abstract
1358489 Klystrons; cavity resonators VARIAN ASSOCIATES 11 May 1972 [17 May 1971] 22059/72 Headings H1D and H1W A turnable multicavity klystron incorporates a resonant load coupled to at least one of the cavities, to introduce a frequency dependent amount of loss, and hence change of Q, such that the bandwidth of the tube is maintained substantially constant throughout the tuning range. As described, the second and third cavities of a five cavity klystron (Fig. 1, not shown) are each provided with a series resonant lossy circuit located wholly within the respective resonator. The lossy circuit may, Fig. 8, be in the form of a conductive plate 26 spaced from the cavity wall 27, and supported from an adjacent wall of the resonator by an arcuate arm 28 which is formed by a stainless steel member sandwiched between a pair of copper segments, the whole being coated with a layer R L of lossy material, e.g. an Al/Cr/Co/Fe alloy, and the plate 26 having a concave, serrated surface (Fig. 9, not shown) to inhibit multifactoring. Alternatively, Fig. 11, the lossy circuit may be in the form of an apertured copper plate, cut at 39, to provide a slotted ring with lossy material 41 coated on its inner surface.
